OUT OF THE BLUE PICTURE DISC: RELEASE DATE UPDATE

Following on from this elobeatlesforever (elobf) article published earlier this week, Sandbag (the official merchandising agent for Jeff Lynne's ELO) announced an indefinite delay in the release of the Electric Light Orchestra classic Jeff Lynne penned 2LP picture disc set for "Out Of The Blue" (889854561611) in an email to customers issued yesterday afternoon (Friday 29th September) citing "manufacturing issues".

Yours Truly KJS notes with interest that amazon.com are now quoting Friday 24th November as the new release date (and a price increase) for this much anticipated commemorative vinyl set. Although frustrating for ELO fans and collectors alike, we should be confident that this particular OOTB treasure will be in our hands well in time for Christmas.

RADIO 1: ROY WOOD STARS IN 50th ANNIVERSARY BBC REPORT

It was a pleasant surprise this morning (Friday 29th September) to see The Move, ELO and Wizzard founder Roy Wood taking part in a BBC Breakfast report on the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast by BBC Radio 1 on this day and date in 1967. Many folks are, of course, aware that Roy penned The Move's #2 hit "Flowers In The Rain" and that it was the first record picked up by legendary DJ Tony Blackburn and played on air.
But for me, it was great to see Woody getting nationwide exposure for something other than a certain Christmas classic as he briefly recalled being asleep and missing the magic moment as a mere 19 year old whilst he too entered British broadcasting history alongside Carl Wayne, Bev Bevan, Trevor Burton and Chris 'Ace' Kefford.
Yours Truly KJS is and always will be a massive Roy Wood fan! elobeatlesforever (elobf) are proud to follow and feature Roy and his career - past, present and future - as he embarks on a series of over twenty UK dates between October and December from Glasgow to Bilston to Swansea with his Rock 'n' Roll Band! You can find out where Roy is playing live, buy tickets and be reminded of his amazing career via these elobf articles thus:

CONCEPT THEORY: TIME AS A 2LP TOO?

Much has been made by elobeatlesforever (elobf) over most of the last decade about the aborted 2LP release of  ELO's 1983 album "Secret Messages" (JETDP402) replete, of course, with "Beatles Forever". The differences between the single and double album editions have been discussed often and many ELO fans - including Yours Truly KJS - still hope for a release that includes all eighteen (18) tracks, as originally intended by Jeff Lynne. Yet before "Secret Messages" (JETLX527) came "Time" (JETLP236) in July 1981 with thirteen (13) songs - including a "Prologue" and "Epilogue" - squeezed onto a single LP. "Time" always struck me as having a relatively high number of tracks for a single album especially when considering that "A New World Record" and "Discovery" only sported nine songs and "Face The Music" just the eight.
So when an expanded and remastered "Time" was released in 2001 with three bonus tracks originally found on the 'B' sides of "Hold On Tight" (JET7011), "Twilight" (JET7015) and the (later) UK 12" single for "Four Little Diamonds" (TA3869) - namely "When Time Stood Still", "Julie Don't Live Here" and "The Bouncer" - I do remember pondering whether "Time" could also have been a double album too in and of itself with these sixteen (16) known tracks: "Prologue" (1:15); "Twilight" (3:35); "Yours Truly 2095" (3:15); "Ticket To The Moon" (4:06); "The Way Life's Meant To Be" (4:36); "Another Heart Breaks" (3:46); "Rain Is Falling" (3:54); "From The End Of The World" (3:16); "The Lights Go Down" (3:31); "Here Is the News" (3:49); "21st Century Man" (4:00); "Hold On Tight" (3:05); "Epilogue" (1:30); "When Time Stood Still" (3:33); "Julie Don't Live Here" (3:42); "The Bouncer" (3:14)
Note that it has also been reported that "Time" was slated to be issued as a double album split between a studio and live recording but this particular elobf article is musing on the potential that existed for a 2LP studio album. So the intent was there. Perhaps Jeff Lynne intended two ELO double albums in the early eighties and was frustrated on more than more occasion with Jet Records curtailing his ambitions. Perhaps not. But I think a concept album like "Time" might have been all the more magnificent in 2LP format. Quite where those three extra tracks would have fitted is also a subject for discussion. Opinions?

OUT OF THE BLUE PICTURE DISC: RELEASE DATE DELAY

There appears to be a little "Confusion" as to whether the much anticipated release of the Electric Light Orchestra classic Jeff Lynne penned double album opus "Out Of The Blue" as a picture disc set (889854561611) will in fact occur on Friday 29th September with mixed signals coming from amazon.co.uk, amazon.com and sandbagheadquarters.com (the official merchandising agent for Jeff Lynne's ELO).

Whereas amazon.com and sandbagheadquarters.com continue to quote the originally cited release date of 29th September, amazon.co.uk - having initially quoted the same release date - are now stating that "This title has not yet been released" having issued an email to their customers on 8th September that they didn't have an estimated delivery date for the item. amazon.co.uk tend to quote imminent release dates for pre-orders so the fact that they are not stating a release date with under a week to go is somewhat surprising.

Yours Truly KJS has ordered via the Jeff Lynne's ELO Shop and has received no notification of a change in release date. If there is a delay, it is likely due more to a healthy pre-order oversubscription or manufacturing issues. It may also be the case that customers in the US will receive their purchases on time with UK/EU customers following thereafter. ELO fans "All Over The World" should therefore "Hold On Tight" to their pre-orders as there is no need to panic!

*** Update: Anticipated release date is now Friday 24th November ***

The 2017 2LP picture disc incarnation of OOTB has been remastered from the original master tapes, includes a digital download and is set to be a prized possession for fans and collectors alike. Pre-orders can still be placed via these links thus:

ALL OVER THE WOLRD: MISSPELT LIGHT ORCHESTRA

The subject of pselling mitsakes ... er ... I mean spelling mistakes and generic errors on record labels featuring ELO, Jeff Lynne and related artistes has often cropped up here at elobeatlesforever (elobf) over the years, as evidenced in elobf articles such as K56021: I'm Only Dreaming Of 4000, King Of The Greenwood Revisited and On The Flip Side: Unreleased ELO. Yours Truly KJS therefore got to thinking on the subject.
From promo to release: Anyone can make a mitsake ...
Perhaps the biggest mistake of all is one that still gets under the skin of ELO maestro Jeff Lynne himself (check out the 2012 documentary "Mr. Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne & ELO") and that is that the first Idle Race record featuring his name: "Impostors Of Life's Magazine" (Liberty LBF15026) managed to credit the songwriter as G. Lynn whilst repeating the error on 'B' side "Sitting In My Tree" to add insult to injury.
"All Over The Wolrd" or "All Over The World"?
Other lamentable labelling that comes to mind can be found on the 1978 reissue of "Mr. Blue Sky" (Jet/CBS SJET104) with ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTA, the alternative lyric version of "Mater Of Fact" found on the flip side of the UK 12" single "So Serious" (Epic TA7090) and, quite amazingly, the listing of "Dreaming Of 4000" as "I'm Only Dreaming" on the original issue of "On The Third Day" (Warner Bros. K56021) not forgetting Arcade's 1987 compilation LP "All Over The Wolrd" (later corrected accordingly) and the Jet/UA muddle with the 'B' side of "Telephone Line" (UP36254). I'm 101% sure that there are plenty of other examples out there! Know of any more?

REVIEW: SIXTHOVERTURE (Bubble Gum Orchestra)

Almost a year to the day since their two volume opus "Sticky Love Songs" hit the virtual shelves, Michael Laine Hildebrandt and his magical Bubble Gum Orchestra (BGO) have just released their sixth studio album - the aptly entitled "Sixthoverture" - taking the concept that is BGO to a whole new level in the opinion of this particular Wulfrunian writer.

"Sixthoverture" has been taken as dark and autobiographical by some reviewers but Yours Truly KJS sees BGO VI as an album of observation and in many respects, hope for the fallen with themes urging recovery, remembrance and revival. Technically, the eleven tracks on offer are ten more superlative MLH compositions and constructions preceded by the stirring "Prologue" that is "Cometh The Storm" yet with artwork depicting aft blue violins lying in the path of an oncoming twister, one could be forgiven for expecting a record that tears a path through the emotions but, for me, this album is a joy to behold with the bold assertion of "A New Kind Of Love Song" balanced by the honesty of "Lower Than Low", the unashamed message that "God Is Good", the entreating request to "Remember Me" and the quite brilliant closing anthem "Have I Told You". BGO long players are always replete with thought provoking lyrics and exquisite musical arrangements intermingled with elements of the classic ELO sound and Power Pop hence you will not be surprised that all those elements are on show here within "Sixthoverture". Perhaps the most remarkable song on offer here is lead single "The Beatles Made Me". Having tackled the subject of the major influence of a certain Brummie band with the iconic "ELO Forever" from "Beyond Time" (2014), "The Beatles Made Me" is a wonderful tune, intentionally or not, paying homage to The Fab Four and retaining all that is BGO whilst underpinning "Sixthoverture".

This is an album that is a delight to listen to and review, continuing what is now an accomplished series of records by Michael Laine Hildebrandt (with a little assistance from Les Farrington of Sugarbomb fame and brother Douglas). Fans of ELO, The Beatles and their musical relatives should take note and dish out their dollars forthwith! ★★★★★

ON THE FLIP SIDE: UNRELEASED ELO

elobeatlesforever (elobf) recently published an article entitled DRUM DREAMING: ELO TRAX ONLY IN VINYL on the subject of ELO songs or tracks that are yet to find their way to digital/CD release and Yours Truly KJS got to thinking as to what previously unreleased ELO tracks found their way on the 'B' side on their vinyl (*and cassette) releases back in the day.

In their heyday, the Electric Light Orchestra were very much a singles band in parallel with their album successes. A fair proportion of their singles between 1974-1981 had album tracks as 'B' sides, as discussed in this May 2015 elobf article: ON THE FLIP SIDE: ELO'S JET 'B' SIDES. From 1973-1980, if you exclude the odd instrumental and live recordings, only "Drum Dreams" broke the monopoly of album tracks on ELO 'B' sides. But from "Time" onwards, ELO fans started to see new material on the flip side of their 7" and/or 12" single releases. In fact, the majority of ELO's UK singles between 1981-86 included new material on Side Two whereas from 1971-80 it was album tracks almost all the way. Here's a list of those previously unreleased ELO tracks all the way from the 'B' side of "Showdown" in '73 through to the infamous "ELO Megamix" found on the reverse side of the "Getting To The Point" 12" single in '86. I hope I've caught 'em all:

"In Old England Town (Instrumental)" ~ Harvest HAR5077B (1973)
"10538 Overture (Live)" ~ Jet JET764B (1975)
"Daybreaker (Live)" ~ Jet JET769B (1975)
"Showdown (Live)" ~ Jet JET779B (1976)
"Drum Dreams" ~ Jet/MCA JET179B (1980)
"When Time Stood Still" ~ Jet JET7011B (1981)
"Julie Don't Live Here" ~ Jet JET7015B (1981)
"After All" ~ Jet A3500B (1983)
"Time After Time" ~ Jet TA3500B; *JETCX527 (1983)
"Buildings Have Eyes" ~ Jet A3720B (1983)
"The Bouncer" ~ Jet TA3869B (1983)
"Caught In A Trap" ~ Epic A6844B (1986)
"Destination Unknown" ~ Epic QTA6844B (1986)
"Matter Of Fact" ~ Epic A7090B (1986)
"Mater Of Fact (Alternative Lyric)" ~ Epic TA7090B (1986)
"ELO Megamix" ~ Epic TA7317B (1986)

Here's an "Afterglow" of a quiz for you ELOnoraks: Can you identify the 'A' sides from the above list of ELO flip sides? I've cited two already but can you find the rest?

Jeff Lynne's ELO After a stint with classic Birmingham bands The Idle Race and The Move, Jeff Lynne co-founded The Electric Light Orchestra in 1971, one of the most successful groups of the seventies and eighties. Multiple hit singles and best selling albums followed making Jeff's anthemic ELO songs some of the most loved and recognisable of the last four decades. Jeff went on to a successful solo career and worked with many of his musical heroes including Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Del Shannon and The Everly Brothers. He also found time to co-found the ultimate 'supergroup' in The Traveling Wilburys, who included pals Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison in their ranks. Find out what the driving force and creative mind behind ELO is currently up to via his official web site thus: www.jefflynneselo.com

BRUMBEAT BULLETIN (2)

Welcome to a somewhat tardy second elobeatlesforever (elobf) BrumBeat Bulletin with some news featuring 'Brum Beat' legends Bev Bevan and Trevor Burton et al.

Earlier this week, drumming legend Bev Bevan - RRHOF 2017 inductee and founding member of The Move, ELO and ELO Part II - made an interesting announcement on his personal Facebook page stating: "Hello facebookers ... It's time to get the band back on the road!". With his Stand Up & Rock! dates with Jasper Carrott now postponed to 2018, this could possibly mean that Bev will be soon rolling out his Zing Band again or perhaps the footage of those rehearsals with Trevor Horn, Chris Norman and Rod Argent earlier this year will coalesce into tour dates. Whatever Bev is alluding to, we look forward to seeing him back on the road soon!

Meanwhile, the 2017 Annual Trevor Burton Charity Show will land at The Austin Sports & Social Club in Longbridge, Birmingham on Saturday 7th October. On the bill are The Steve Gibbons BandThe Trevor Burton Band (of course), Danny King, Zoe Green and Steve Ajao with proceeds going to local charities dedicated to finding homes for retired racing greyhounds. Tickets are priced at £12.00 each [*plus booking fee]. Telephone (07775) 714280 or click on these links to buy tickets:

SEVENTY SOON: ROY WOOD & JEFF LYNNE

As we approach the final quarter of 2017, two of the three official founding members of The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) are approaching a significant milestone. Whereas Bev Bevan will be 73 years of age as of Saturday 25th November, both Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne will be celebrating their 70th birthdays on Wednesday 8th November and Saturday 30th December respectively. This being despite the "Confusion" generated in this Guardian article last year where they initially stated Roy's age as 70 (as did Yours Truly KJS and a number of well known media sources) prompting Woody to declare his then correct age of 69 on his Twitter page, as covered in this elobeatlesbeatlesforever (elobf) article thus:

ROY WOOD: 69 (not 70) YEARS OLD TODAY!

We can therefore look forward with confidence to both Roy and Jeff reaching the grand young age of seventy in the coming months with their many fans and admirers perhaps thinking of inventive ways in which to mark both occasions whilst not forgetting Bev's birthday in the midst.

CAUGHT LIVE (2): THE ELO ENCOUNTER @ BIRMINGHAM 01/09/17

Having literally "Blown Away" those in attendance at their Birmingham debut in March, The ELO Encounter made their much anticipated if not rapid return to The Roadhouse last night (Saturday 1st September) - just a stones throw from Shard End (relatively speaking) - and proceeded to once again entertain and enrapture another packed house of Brummies (and the odd Wulfrunian) with an extensive set ELO classics. The ELO Encounter have the ability to reproduce the various phases of ELO on stage with apparent ease and this performance proved it. Whether it be the ace vocals of keyboardist Jack Rownes or the essential sound of the band as a unit (with guitarist AJ deputizing nicely for the poorly Martin Donald), The ELO Encounter know how to reproduce the music of the Electric Light Orchestra with accuracy and respect to the production values of Jeff Lynne. The attention to detail by bassist Simon Rownes (including his operatic intro for "Rockaria!") and drummer Simon Dove was of the highest order. A repeat special mention is also due for the wonderful lead vocal provided by Jasmine Ali, which added verve and authenticity to "Xanadu".

Whereas most bands tend to leave the likes of "Mr. Blue Sky", "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Roll Over Beethoven" to the end of their sets, The ELO Encounter play 'em early so as to surprise and keep their audience of their toes - even if MBS does make a return as their encore! This means that there is a certain sense of excitement as this Essex based troupe perform. Their set last night was inventive to with five songs from "Time" - including a superb "Ticket To The Moon" - as well as "I'm Alive" (the first time that Yours Truly KJS has heard it live). Elsewhere, it was a pleasure to hear "Nightrider", "Great Balls Of Fire" and "Here Is The News" again amongst familiar faves "10538 Overture", "Ma Ma Ma Belle", "Do Ya" and "All Over The World"The ELO Encounter are well worth their place with the expanding pool of quality ELO tribute bands. You should consider taking in one of their shows, should they land at a venue near you.
The ELO Encounter performed: "10538 Overture" ~ "Evil Woman" ~ "Prologue/Twilight" ~ "Mr. Blue Sky" ~ "Rock 'n' Roll Is King" ~ "I'm Alive" ~ "Ticket To The Moon" ~ "Strange Magic" ~ "Here Is The News" ~ "Turn To Stone" ~ "Telephone Line" ~ "Xanadu" ~ "Showdown" ~ "Confusion" ~ "Don't Bring Me Down" ~ "Hold On Tight" ~ "Roll Over Beethoven" ~ "Sweet Talkin' Woman" ~ "Livin' Thing" ~ "Nightrider" ~ "Ma Ma Ma Belle" ~ "Do Ya" ~ "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" ~ "Rockaria!" ~ "Great Balls Of Fire" ~ "The Diary Of Horace Wimp" ~ "All Over The World" ~ "Last Train To London" ~ "Shine A Little Love" ~ "Wild West Hero" ~ "Mr. Blue Sky"
