Regarding Richard Tandy

The initials RT to most folks these days mean 'retweet' but to followers of the Electric Light Orchestra they refer to Richard Tandy, the keyboard maestro who has been at the side of Jeff Lynne for well over four decades. His absence from ELO's recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame [RRHOF] induction in New York left many fans wondering as to the reason for Richard's non-attendance, particularly as no news has been forthcoming from 'official' channels since.

Recent photos from the Jeff Lynne's ELO practice sessions and even the odd picture from Chris Evan's Dine 'n' Disco fundraiser for BBC Children Need, held last Saturday (17th June) at Chewton Glen in Hampshire (not too far from their rehearsal studio in South East London) do not show RT in his familiar position by the side of Jeff. It therefore seems reasonable (without speculating) to consider the strong possibility that Richard may well not feature during the forthcoming quartet of EJLO dates at Sheffield, London, Glasgow and Hull.
Whilst elobeatlesforever (elobf) and the 70,000 fans expected at Wembley Stadium on Saturday would dearly love to see RT on stage, if he is indeed not there (for whatever the reason), Yours Truly KJS would like to wish Richard all the very best for the future, hoping that he'll be back alongside Jeff in the ELO spaceship soon.

Until next "Time" in the ELO [and related] Universe ... KJS ... 20-June-2017

  1. Worrying. Hope you're OK Mr T. It won't feel the same without your presence.

    1. Dear Anonymous. I too am not amused either. And here's why: My article did not speculate as to the reason(s) for RT's absence from both the RRHOF event or the four recent (public) dates. That is personal and private to Richard and I would never make it public in a month of Sundays. It did state that the fan base miss RT and look forward to his return to the EJLO line-up. There were no untruths in there but merely a summary of what concerned fans were saying and expressing. At no time was there any intention to offend RT or invade his privacy. RT is known by hundreds of thousands of fans as an integral member of ELO so his absence would be noticed and is of public knowledge.

So why am I not amused? Because my name has been dragged through the mud (again) when I have done nothing wrong but to state the obvious whilst wishing RT all the very best. My reward is to have my elobf article(s) reported as abusive and offensive to the point where I am unfairly sanctioned by Facebook. elobf gives all artistes in the ELO universe free and fair coverage, never publishing rumour and always trying to remain unbiased. What is offensive, abusive and of no amusement is the defamation of my character by certain persons and (perhaps) even paid employees of 'Team Jeff' itself.

I am disappointed that you 'Anonymous' are not amused. I can tell you that neither am I. elobeatlesforever (elobf) has, is and will be always about the music. It is not about politics, malicious backbiting or invading the privacy of anyone. Whomever you are, I wish you well for the future and hold no grudges. West Bishes ... KJS@elobf

    2. Here here! I for one do not see anything malicious and unparticularly evasive or speculative in your article. It goes to the heart of a true fan, and if read by such should be considered a kind and warm gesture of said fandom. I'm sorry for any trouble you have had because people have lost the art of reading and comprehension on this planet. Keep on keeping on, and ELO forever!

  5. I believe that if RT was ill, surely someone from Jeff Lynne's management would have come forward with that information by now. Notice how Jeff didnt say much about him at the rrhof induction speech. Jeff only said that he was not in attendance with no reason given. My honest opinion is that Richard got fed up with all the politics of the elo name and riffs between the former band members. The whole rock and roll hall of fame gig seemed to revolve mostly around Jeff. Yeah Jeff played a huge part in elo but so did all the other players. Unless Jeff Lynne apologizes and thanks everyone who contributed to elo through the years, I personally will not listen to any elo music and have lost all respect for him. So Mr. Lynne if you are reading this, I hope you will seriously think about this and let bygones be bygones. And if your management is causing you to behave this way then I would drop them because I think your friends and fans should be more important than the all mighty dollar.

    1. You are projecting your resentments on Jeff, Richard, and the former band members. None of us have any idea how they feel about the bygones or what conversations about them may have taken place.

    2. Well... That's silly .. I personally got a lot of great music as the ELO branches entwine. Taf Williams

    3. I am not projecting any of my "personal" resentments towards anyone. Did you watch the induction ceremony? Jeff clearly did not thank his fellow band mates or even the fans? Without us and them he would not be where he is at today. And some of Jeff's management team needs to learn proper manners when dealing with the public. Some of them are just down right rude and think that they are above everybody else. I honestly believe his management is to blame for all of the rude behavior and division amongst the members.

    4. While I don't know why RT was not there, I totally agree on the whole RRHoFameShame. JL seems to give no credit or thanks to the rest of the band which certainly made it possible for him to have those hits. There's more to the story, what with his perpetual lawsuits against people.

    5. Same here, I agree with the first/third Anonymous & Unknown and call bullshit! :'( >:(

    6. Turns out Richard was ill. No resentment. No politics. No bullshit. Don't you Jeff haters have egg on your face!

    7. Not really Jeff didn't acknowledge the former members of ELO...I was dumbfounded and thought it was a horrible HOF speech.
It's JL who sadly has the egg on face.

  6. Thanks for this Keith. One of the many things that made that ELO sound so special was the genius that is Richard Tandy. I do hope and pray he is ok. Very disappointed that we have heard nothing from "official" channel's.

  8. LOL If I stopped listening or watching movies of my favorite artists because of their politics or seemingly bad behavior there would be no one left to entertain me but my own right hand...oh wait, I know where it's been. We're broken up. Now I have nothing.

  9. He was mentioned at Wembley last night. "Not well. Recovering at home. Will be back for next leg of the tour."

  10. Wishing the very best to Richard Tandy. I have truly missed seeing him with Jeff Lynne in the most recent televised events and in the posts from some fans of the concert at Wembley on Facebook for which I am very grateful. I hope you are well Mr. Tandy and if not Godspeed!

  11. May I politely suggest in reply to some suggestions of a fall out, people often prefer to keep an illness a private matter, and I suspect Jeff has been respecting Richard's wishes by keeping his comments to a minimum. I'm sure and hope he'll be back soon.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I listened very carefully to Jeff Lynne's speech at the RRHOF in April during which Jeff commented on Richard Tandy's absence from the stage, saying "which is a shame". People do often wish to keep private matters, such as illness, private. These two old guys have known each other a very long time, so it would be a great surprise if one were to disrespect the other in such circumstances. But it would be good to hear Jeff acknowledge many fans genuine concerns at tomorrow night's concert in Glasgow, however briefly or obliquely.

  14. Please inform me as to how to communicate with RT !!! I need to find out just how he is really doing !!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh dear. I suppose this speculation was inevitable, in the absence of an official statement from either of the two guys who are at the centre of it all. However I respect their privacy, and have no doubt we will all know when they decide the time is right - and maybe KJS (to whom we all owe a great deal) will be the first to hear anything. In the meantime...perhaps it's best to move on.

  19. too bad jeff and roy are so headstrong and opinionated about sound and recording...i love their voices...two great singers together and both great musicians are always more interesting than a solo...but...that's art and the delicate process of making it...maybe in heaven they will sing again

  21. shameful that mik, and the others were not included. very, very, very sad. shame on you jeff.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think if Richard is not included on the upcoming tour there may be something to this. I was very suspiscious when I heard Bev Bevan interviewed immediately after ELO was announced as a new inductee winner. He said he hoped that Jeff would be able to let bygones be bygones and he would love to be there to be with the band in Cleveland. Then after a few months, all that was said Bev wouldn't be at the induction ceremony because he had previous engagements. Really?? Previous engagements more important than the biggest honor in your entire life?? Would that be a real reason for anyone? As if you couldn't get out of a previous engagement that was months away to be inducted into the R&R HOF? Or was it because he was not wanted at the ceremony so he didn't bother to cancel his previous commitment. I know Richard and Bev were close, and Richard could easily benn put off by Bev not being included in the induction. The silence from everyone is deafening. If Richard is not on the current tour I'm not sure it's being sick anymore, unless he is sick and tired of the nonsense.

  23. I wish I could see Mik perform, if he still does. Not that Rosie Langley isn't good, it's just not the same. Just like it's not the same w/o Richard. Hope all is well with him.

  24. I myself am megapumped to be going to the oakland gig... as far as the Hall of Fame politics are concerned of course I'd like to see RT at Jeff side where he belongs but overall I'm just grateful to be having the opportunity to see the Great and Mighty ELO in action again and Wonderland in San Francisco in the 70s that gig was the top three concerts of my whole life and I saw quite a few saw them in the 80s and never never was disappointed my advice to all ELO fans forget the politics be grateful that you have the opportunity to see them play slow down and soak it in and most of all enjoy!!! One thing I am absolutely sure of is that you won't be disappointed all of us Rockers are coming around the turn and heading into the stretch in life as a lifetime yes fan and seen what's happening with Moog and with UFO you just never know when the gig you see are the gig you hear about will be the last gig that's available so don't waste your time on the politics you happen to have the ticket to one of the shows rock out brothers and sisters rock out!!!

  25. I wish there was some update. I know he wants his privacy but he could have a statement made with minimal invasion. Thrilling to see ELO touring but just a wee bit sad that he is not with them again.

  26. Great show at the Forum, but would have been more fun with RT there.

  27. I, for one, in hopes that Richard Tandy would be back in the lineup by now, have sold off my Detroit ELO tickets I bought last summer. Let's face facts, ELO is not the same band w/o RT at the MOOG. I fervently hope you are well Mr. Tandy and that this has all been a 2 year nitemare that eventually comes to an end when we all wake from it and find you back at the keyboards.

  28. Great show last night in NYC. I am on this site because I immediately noticed NO RT :(

I am hopeful that some day these 70 yo rock superstars will just get over it (whatever it is) and maybe do a few REAL, TOTAL ELO shows ?

Too much to ask I guess.

  29. Jeff has done it right. He acknowledged it's not the same ELO and calls it Jeff Lynne's ELO. The shows are great and it has better quality than any 70's or 80's show. You will notice every graphic on the screen and all the merchandise has those words, "Jeff Lynne's ELO". I'm an oldie so I would love to see the old ates together but it is as it's advertised to be.
