REVIEW: BELIEVE [Rebecca Downes]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! If her debut album "Back To The Start" was a statement of intent then "Believe" - the new offering from local Blues songstress Rebecca Downes - is truly a fulfilment of promise indeed. Make no mistake about it, this classy album, recorded under two [2] miles away from ELOBF HQ, is full of hot smokin' and foot tappin' British Blues of the highest order.

"Believe" contains twelve [12] songs co-written by Bekah and Steve Birkett and all dozen on offer are a delight to the ear , showcasing - as they do - the immense talent of this lady and the marvellous band that she has assembled in the studio and on the road: Dan Clark, Rick Benton, Lloyd Daker, Rik Sandford and the aforementioned Steve Birkett - with a little help from her friends Norman Beaker, Paul Gooderham and Mark V Stuart.

Highlights are many with "Never Gonna Learn" very much influenced by Dr. Feelgood and "Salt Winds" oozing Carlos Santana. Blues rocker "Sailing On A Pool Of Tears" also impresses as does the the funky "Sweetness" and the sultry "Could Not Say No". I keep putting current 'B' side "1,000 Years" on repeat because it is just so good with title track and lead single "Believe" an absolute sonic jewel. Don't forget to also check out the extremely cool "Come With Me Baby" featuring an inspired Norman Beaker in tandem with Rebecca's pure vocal delivery.

Yours Truly KJS looks forward to hearing this inspired new material live and, as far as this LP goes, I "Believe" - if you'll excuse the pun - that it will firmly put Rebecca Downes on the map when it is released from Friday 4th March. Go buy it folks and don't forget to turn the volume up! [9/10]

RARE ELDORADO VINYL UNEARTHED

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Michael Laine Hildebrandt is not only the maestro behind the fantastic Bubble Gum Orchestra [BGO], he's also a good friend of Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF]. Michael dropped me a line recently to tell me that he had come across what looks like an extremely rare piece of Electric Light Orchestra [ELO] vinyl history and had obtained it for a tidy sum.
It was part of a larger collection formerly owned by a 69 year old lady from Los Angeles who knew a member of the band and, looking at the sleeve and LP, this looks very much like a rare test pressing for of the US issue of ELO's classic symphonic masterpiece "Eldorado" [#UA-LA339-G], perhaps "RUSH" released for FM radio airplay. Dated 11th September 1974, the plain sleeve contains various interesting annotations such as "EVERYTHING SEGUES!" [in amazement maybe?] and also lists the ASCAP numbers for all original ten [10] tracks as well as crediting a certain Richard Dandy!
Both MLH and myself feel that this is a significant find and worthy of sharing with fellow ELO fans worldwide. All photos are published with the permission of Michael Laine Hildebrandt. Enjoy!

BRYAN ADAMS: DO WHAT YA GOTTA DO

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! My fave track on Bryan Adams' impressive Jeff Lynne produced album "Get Up" has always been "Do What Ya Gotta Do". For me, it's the jewel of his #2 best seller and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] are most pleased that Bryan has released a new official music video today [Thursday 18th February] for "Do What Ya Gotta Do" in advance of his forthcoming UK and Ireland tour in April and May. Have a watch/listen to a production that has the feel of classic Tom Petty and would sit well - in the opinion of Yours Truly KJS - on an album like "Into The Great Wide Open" thus:

SUNDAE CLUB & BILL HUNT: CARLSBERG SPECIAL SEQUEL SOON!

Bill Hunt has conjured up a follow-up to "The Carlsberg Special" with The Sundae Club and some friends ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Here is a little teaser of the latest musical project by ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommended artiste The Sundae Club - including a special message from a certain Bill Hunt thus:

"BILL HUNT is a [still] walking piece of pop memorabilia; a collectors’ item. The only musician, along with the superlative ROY WOOD, to have been in the original line up of both the world renowned ELO and 70’s glam rock chart toppers WIZZARD, who used to wish it could be Christmas every day. In 1972, Bill wrote the 'B' side of the first WIZZARD single, "Ball Park Incident", which sold over 250,000 copies. The original title was to be "The Light Fantastic", but Roy wasn’t so keen, as there was a local Birmingham band of the same name. So unbeknownst to Bill, the band re-named the track "The Carlsberg Special [Pianos Demolished Phone 021 373 4472]". The inclusion of Bill’s home number in the title led to his phone ringing non-stop and double non-stop at the weekends. It seemed that everybody who bought the record had decided to ring the number on the back, out of curiosity. He was forced to change his number. About a year later the same number was allocated to a dear, unwitting, lady pensioner and it started ringing all over again! Carlsberg Special Brew, at 9%, was the band’s then drink of choice - that and rocket fuel! Pianos demolished? This was back in the days of student piano smashing contests - no computer games then - and Bill was following in the footsteps of The Move’s Carl Wayne [TV sets]; The Who’s Pete Townshend [guitars] and, of course, The Who’s drummer Keith Moon [anything]. The single was launched at The Magic Circle Club (Wizzard - geddit?) in London, the world’s most prestigious magic club. Carlsberg even showed up with crates of their Special Brew!

43 years later, Bill has written the follow up -"EL ORIGINAL BREW". It came to him in a flash! After his early rock band experiences, followed by 30 years in music education, intertwined with a performing and writing career, including a jointly written album with song writing partner Dave Hill, of once rival band Slade - we both think we had the best Christmas single - inspiration struck. It came through his meeting up with Hamstall Ridware and Dr. C. D. Mille of The Sundae Club, to whom he was introduced by his old [well actually a little bit younger than him], school mate Steve Winwood. Ridware and Mille were massive fans of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and the early ELO style. The seed was sown; the horn was blown.

"EL ORIGINAL BREW" will also be released in a limited edition, vinyl format but we would be happy to sell 250,000 copies like the original. On “Side 2” will be a Sundae Club-ed version of singer-songwriter Will Hunt’s [Bill’s son] homage to Kentish Town, called "Drums & Bass". Will led the Columbia-signed band Dansette Junior, whose single Paranoid has over 1,500,000 hits on YouTube. Ridware and Mille have produced an early ELO-type arrangement in the style of "10538 Overture", the first ELO single. This makes the vinyl version probably the only single in history ever to be released as a Double B Side! Bill was most ably assisted up the stairs and in this epic piece of Rock 'n' Roll Re-Enactment by…

THE SUNDAE CLUB: the multi-talented and multi-faceted production team of Hamstall Ridware and Dr. C. D. Mille, perfect in planning and execution - from which they were reprieved.

NICK PENTELOW: one of the 2 guys with the most sax appeal in WIZZARD, who spent years down the pit [playing in top London musicals] and now rides alongside Andy Fairweather Low [ex-Amen Corner & Eric Clapton] And The Low Riders.

MILES HUNT & ERICA NOCKALLS: Miles is the singer/songwriter/frontman/raconteur with 80’s & 90’s chart toppers THE WONDER STUFF and was pageboy at Bill’s wedding! Now he can add electric sitar soloist to his long list of continuing accolades. Erica spread sparkling and inventive violin parts all over the track as she does with ‘The Stuffies’, her own EN band and indeed, when Glastonbury-ing with The Proclaimers.

HUGH McDOWELL: ex-ELO & ex-WIZZARD but mainly chief cello and wine consultant.

And a special thanks to the Mystery Drummer."

Yours Truly KJS was privileged to have a listen to "EL Original Brew" [in a Frome car park last year!] and can confirm that it will be well worth the wait for fans of ELO, Roy Wood, Wizzard and - of course - The Sundae Club. Pre-ordering details for both the download and vinyl editions of the single will be published by ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] in the near future.

REVIEW: THE LOVE BRIGADE EP

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Towards the end of 2015, Jeff Jewett contacted Yours Truly KJS at ELO Beatles Forever (ELOBF) regarding his new musical project The Love Brigade and their then just released self-titled four (4) track EP.

The Love Brigade EP was recorded in both Los Angeles and New York City by this LA based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and is clearly a recording influenced by Jeff Jewett's love of his [our our] musical hero Jeff Lynne, particularly if you favour the unique production values and that certain sound delivered by the ELO maestro after "Balance Of Power" with artistes such as The Traveling Wilburys, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bryan Adams. This quartet of songs have a natural flow and are replete with familiar Lynnesque traits whilst retaining and presenting the composition and performing talents of this particular Jeff. This is an EP that fans of ELO & Jeff Lynne will enjoy discovering and maybe even rename "The ELOve Brigade" for such are the quite excellent harmonies, chords and drum work found herein. Well worth an asking price of around $5 in the States and a bargain at just under £4 in the UK. Buy it! (9/10)

The Love Brigade EP is: [1] "Where We Started" [3:30] ~ [2] "Honor Among Thieves" [5:39]
[3] "I Can Be Anything" [3:59] ~ [4] "Great Day" [4:35]

You can find out more about The Love Brigade at www.facebook.com/lovebrigademusic and/or www.youtube.com/channel/TheLoveBrigade. The Love Brigade EP was released on Thursday 12th November 2015 and can be purchased in download format via these links thus:

ELOBF: 7th ANNIVERSARY TODAY!

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! This is ELOBF article #1,054 and today is Tuesday 2nd February 2016 - also known as Groundhog Day! It's also seven [7] years since ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF]was born back in 2009.

I thought that  it would be interesting to see what the most read ELOBF article is and - with 21,763 views [at the time of writing] - it continues to be my review of Jeff Lynne's amazing live return with his new ELO line-up at Hyde Park in September 2014 thus:
