JET7021: IT'S A SLEEVIN' THING

The Way Life's Meant To Be: UK 7" promo, European P/S and a certain UK 12" picture disc ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! I remember finding out that "The Way Life's Meant To Be" b/w "Wishing" [JET7021] was being released as the fourth single from ELO's former #1 album "Time" [JETLP236] in March 1982. But Yours Truly KJS also remembers walking into Sundown Records in Wolverhampton to buy the 7" only to find out that that it was issued in a plain white paper sleeve. The first record that I ever bought was "Turn To Stone" [UP36313] in November 1977 in its distinctive blue picture sleeve and, after that, every ELO UK 7"single had come in some kind of picture sleeve.

Meanwhile, over in Germany and Holland, "The Way Life's Meant To Be" [JET809] did see release with an interesting picture sleeve, using the same artwork and imagery that adorned the UK 12" picture disc of the double AA side "Ticket To The Moon" b/w "Here Is The News" [JETP12018] - the third single, of course, from "Time". Note that the 7" UK issue [JET7018] came in the sleeve originally intended for the second ELO EP [ELO2], peaking at a respectable #24.
The UK 7" P/S for "Ticket To The Moon"/"Here Is The News" [JET7018] and a rear view of JET809 ...
As a 14 year old fan and collector, I remember feeling really disappointed especially when I discovered that Magnum's "The Lights Burned Out" [JET7020] and Carl 'Charlie' Wayne's "Aerial Pictures" [JET7022] had both been released with picture sleeves. Unfortunately - and not unsurprisingly - JET7021 became the first ELO single to not trouble the Official UK Top 75 Singles Chart since "Nightrider" [JET769] back in 1975.

This heralded the beginning of the end for Don Arden's Jet Records empire, especially when taking into account the deletion of that second ELO EP [ELO2] and the failure to chart of the boxed set "Four Light Years" [JETBX2]. It was also the last "Time" in the UK that four [4] physical singles were issued from an ELO studio album ...

Until next "Time" in the ELO [and related] Universe ... KJS ... 09-Jan-2016
