STATE OF BIND: AN ELO STORY DISCOVERY

Much loved: The Electric Light Orchestra Story by Bev Bevan ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! When  ELO were at their commercial peak in 1980, fans of the magnificent seven rushed out to buy Bev Bevan's marvellous autobiographical book "The Electric Light Orchestra Story" [Mushroom Publishing; ISBN 0-907394-00-0; ISBN 0-907394-01-9]. And Yours Truly KJS was one of them!
Repeat Read: I wish I was back at page 65?
Unfortunately, my prized hardback copy later went missing during a home relocation in the early nineties so I bought a paperback copy - or "Limp Edition" as it was termed - to replace it at a record fair thereafter. However, when I got it home, I discovered something interesting. Pages 65 through to 80 appeared twice in succession and pages 81 through to 96 were completely missing!
Second Time Around: Pages 81-96 are missing ...
ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] would like to know if any fellow ELO fans and/or regular visitors to ELOBF have also come across this misprint? Many thanx in advance!

JEFF LYNNE'S ELO: NEW SINGLE, NEW ALBUM, LIVE DATES!

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans duly played, as promised, the brand new Jeff Lynne's ELO track "When I Was A Boy" - taken from the forthcoming new album "Alone In The Universe" - at 7:40AM this morning.

"Alone in the Universe" ~ "When I Was A Boy" [3:12] ~ "Love And Rain" ~ "Faultline" ~ "Dirty To The Bone" ~ "When The Night Comes" [3:22] ~ "Blue" ~ "The Sun Will Shine On You" [3:29] ~ "Ain't It A Drag" ~ "All My Life" ~ "I'm Leaving You" ~ "One Step At A Time"

The new track is full of those familiar and loved Jeff Lynne trademark melodies, sentimental if not moving lyrics and the trademark production values of the ELO maestro. For Yours Truly KJS, it's another nod to the "Long Wave" days of his boyhood and a homage to the late, great John Lennon.

New single "When I Was A Boy" [you can listen to it here too] is released tomorrow Friday 25th September with "Alone In The Universe" also available to pre-order in download, CD and 180g vinyl formats from the same date via these links thus:
"When I was a boy, I had a dream ..."
The popular breakfast show experienced a significant surge in listener numbers in anticipation of hearing the new track this morning. The DJ also revealed that said new LP will be released soon [confirmed later as Friday 13th November 2015] via, of course, Columbia Records. The erstwhile One Show presenter also stated that we may even see Jeff Lynne's ELO live performances before Christmas and, of course, during Spring 2016! [Ed.]

In the meantime, don't forget that Jeff will be a guest on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show tomorrow morning - Friday 25th Septemberbetween 6:30AM and 9:30AM thus:

JEFF LYNNE'S ELO HOLD ON TIGHT TO TOP CHART SLOT

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! To further underline the amazing success of the DVD and Blu-Ray release of their "Live In Hyde Park" concert, Jeff Lynne's ELO have retained their #1 position at the summit of the Official Music UK Video Top 50 Chart. Hence, with a new album set to be unveiled via Columbia Records soon as well as those much anticipated first tour dates in thirty [30] years and another appearance on BBC Radio 2 later this week, the ELO maestro continues to be "... sailing away on a crest of a wave ..." in terms of popularity.
Another Chart Breaks: #3 in the US Billboard Music Video Chart too!
So here's to the very real possibility of a first UK [and hopefully worldwide] Number One album for ELO since 1981's "Time" and hopefully some very spectacular Electric Light fantastic concerts in the days, weeks and months ahead! We shall find out a little more in just under three [3] days ...

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans announced this morning [Monday 21st September] that ELO maestro Jeff Lynne will be appearing on his Breakfast Show [at some time between 6:30AM and 9:30AM] and - allegedly - also on BBC1's The One Show [7:00PM] this coming Friday 25th September 2015 thus:

The popular DJ and TV presenter - lauded for his public urging of Jeff to perform live again -  also announced that Bryan Adams would be making an appearance on Friday 9th October ahead of his new Jeff Lynne produced album "Get Up" [released on Friday 16th October].
Jeff Lynne on The One Show again: Yay or Nay?

INTERVIEW: ADRIAN GOLDBERG [BBC Radio WM]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Whilst I was in downtown Birmingham last Sunday 13th September for that fantastic Morganisation gig [read this review] and quite "Out Of The Blue", BBC Radio WM 95.6 contacted Yours Truly KJS at ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] requesting an interview on the subject of the newly inked global record deal with Columbia Records by Jeff Lynne's ELO [read this article] and by extension the forthcoming new album.

The interview took place with DJ Adrian Goldberg via telephone the next morning [Monday 14th September], a little after 7:20AM and - after a number of requests - I've transliterated the interview and present it below for your kind perusal thus:

AG: “So the news that fans of this band have been waiting for for fifteen years: [plays excerpts from “Mr. Blue Sky”, “Sweet Talkin’ Woman”, “Mercy, Mercy” and “Evil Woman”] That’s great isn’t it? Just some of the greatest hits from the legendary Birmingham singer, songwriter, musician, producer, tea maker. What can’t he do? The leader of ELO, Jeff Lynne and the band have signed a global deal with Columbia Records and is set to release their first album in fifteen years! Keith Sinclair from Wolverhampton is a blogger at ELO Beatles Forever. Hello Keith, how are you mate?"
KJS: “Good morning Adrian. How are you?”
AG: “I’m very good. Now listen. When ELO were in their pomp, I was a bit of a punk rocker! Now, when I listen to those things, what great music!”
KJS: “I think it’s a lost heritage of the Midlands. A band that was not trendy to like, apparently - according to the media - is now back in the high life. Things have gone full circle, it’s a great thing to hear.”
AG: “I interviewed Jeff last year when he got his star on the ‘Walk of Stars’ on Broad Street in Birmingham and I know that he’s aware of the affection that people in this area have for him but as a fan Keith, did you think that the days of ELO albums had gone forever?”
KJS: “I think that with the success of his comeback, he re-did the ELO tracks for the “Mr. Blue Sky” album and his comeback with his solo album “Long Wave”, that invoked a great deal of enthusiasm. Certainly, the last album “Zoom” back in 2001 was ... a long time ago! A lot of people thought that he was doing a lot of work for other artists and "Are we ever going to see an album?" but I kind of kept a light lit and I’m really pleased to hear that he’s coming back as Jeff Lynne’s ELO on the back of all that success at Hyde Park.”
AG: “Yes, a big, I think BBC concert wasn’t it? And again you know people just sort of reminded because you forget sometimes. Then you hear track after track after track, great hit after great hit after great hit played out. “Oh! They’re really good!” And ELO, which essentially is Jeff Lynne and whichever group of musicians he chooses that week are, you know, a terrific band. And you mentioned the fact that he had gone back hadn’t he and he’d gone over ELO’s greatest hits and sort of re-dubbed them, re-mastered them and maybe that just reminded him of what he’d been missing as a performer.”
KJS: “Certainly, and with a song book of 27 UK Top 40 singles - and you’ve played some of those hits this morning - it’s a tremendous heritage for him, for the work he’s done since his days with The Idle Race, obviously The Move, and the work he’s done with the Wilburys and people who are basically musical heroes. I was in Birmingham yesterday, funnily enough, looking at the new DVD that’s out, it’s gone straight to number one, the second Blu-Ray number one of the year for Jeff and the band. He’s riding on the crest of a wave to quote one of the singles and it’s great to be an ELO fan again. I used to get a bit of trouble at school about that!”
AG: “It would have been someone like me giving you trouble as well Keith but, you know, I’m more than willing to doff my hat! What do you know when you’re fourteen and fifteen about music, about what’s fashionable or what you think your mates will like? I wouldn’t turn my back on any of the music I used to love then but your musical tastes broaden I think and you just have to give a nod to the genius that is Jeff Lynne. Great to speak to you Keith, thank you. Keith Sinclair from Wolverhampton, blogger at ELO Beatles Forever on the return of, yes Pete you said it, Shard End’s finest: ELO!”

My interview can be found between 24:03 and 29:07 on BBC iPlayer Radio up until Tuesday 13th October via this link thus:

BEATLES 1: DVD & BLU-RAY RELEASE FOR CLASSIC PROMOS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! John Lennon once termed ELO as the "... son of Beatles" [read this article] and Jeff Lynne paid tribute to The Fab Four when he penned the enigmatic "Beatles Forever" in advance of the "Secret Messages" sessions. Hence, there is a natural extension for fans of ELO to also be fans of The Beatles [and, of course, vice versa].

So the news that The Beatles have announced today [Tuesday 15th September 2015] that we can now look forward to seeing CD, DVD and Blu-Ray sets of their 27 UK and US chart toppers [as featured in their bestselling "1" compilation] in "Beautifully Restored Promotional Films and Videos" as of Friday 6th November will mean that many of us will hit the pre-order buttons en masse. You can find out more about this exciting release via this link thus:

LIVE IN HYDE PARK: ELO RETURN TO CHART SUMMIT

Number #1 again: A second chart topper for ELO in 2015 ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! With such overwhelming pre-order sales, it came as no surprise to see Jeff Lynne's ELO return to the summit of the Official UK Music Video Chart Top 50 this week. Following on from the success of the Blu-Ray edition of ELO's classic "Out Of The Blue: Live At Wembley" 1978 concert back in March [read this article], "Live In Hyde Park" by Jeff Lynne's ELO [read this review] is another resounding endorsement for the ELO maestro as he prepares to fulfill the "Dream" of many a fan and release not only a brand new ELO long player via Columbia Records [read this article] but also embark on his first ELO tour dates since 1986.

With the Jeff Lynne produced Bryan Adams album "Get Up" around the corner [read this article] and a brief cameo in the excellent new Pugwash release [read this review], these are indeed great days for fans of ELO & Jeff Lynne!

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] and Yours Truly KJS sincerely hope that Columbia Records and Sony Music correctly market and promote the forthcoming new album, so rightfully returning the Electric Light Orchestra to the top of the UK Album Chart.

CAUGHT LIVE: MORGANISATION

Morganisation with Jeff Lynne looking on ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! It was an easy decision to make the short train trip to Birmingham's Old Joint Stock Pub & Theatre venue earlier today [Sunday 13th September 2015] to finally get to see Morganisation - the musical quintet headed up by former ELO member Dave Scott-Morgan - perform live. And if this was a toe in the water by the ex-Uglys and Magnum man to see what the reaction to his wonderfully entertaining multi-media show of original songs, ELO covers, Rock 'n' Roll classics, probing questions [from his talented wife Mandy, of course!] and some remarkable storytelling of his journey through 'Brum Beat' to being a part of the Electric Light Orchestra and beyond, it was a superb success.
Morganisation: "Telephone Line"
Morganisation managed to squeeze in 27 songs in a two [2] hour set balanced [with an impressive visual backdrop] that included a nice spread of songs from the Morgan album "Across The Divide" [reviewed here], a quartet of ELO hits, some Beatles and Bob Dylan as well as new song "Knower". We also got to see "Hiroshima", some "Spaceship Earth" and a little "Something" else. Tales of dealing with Don Arden and meeting George Harrison meant that all bases were covered. This was no concert, it was an experience of the career of one of Birmingham's unsung music talents. And it works really well judging by the fun had on stage and by the delight of the packed house looking on. We look forward to seeing Morganisation out and about regularly at theatres and venues soon. Go see 'em folks!

Set list: "Benediction" ~ "Peggy Sue Got Married" ~ "All I Have To Do Is Dream" ~ "Blowin' In The Wind" ~ "Livin' Thing" ~ "Love Hurts" ~ "Something" ~ "Blackberry Way" ~ "Ball And Chain" ~ "Hiroshima" ~ "This Boy" ~ "All You Need Is Love" ~ "Spaceship Earth" ~ "Telephone Line" ~ "Rock 'n' Roll Is King" ~ "Cut Across Shorty" ~ "Every Little Thing" ~ "Girl In A Jaguar" ~ "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" ~ "Sea Of Heartbreak" ~ "Shanty Town Blues" ~ "Normal Day" ~ "Well ... All Right" ~ "Mission Impossible" ~ "Knower" ~ "Mr. Blue Sky" ~ "Baby's In Black"
Morganisation are: Dave Scott-Morgan [Lead vocals/guitars] ~ Mandy Scott-Morgan [Vocals/percussion] ~ Alan Smith [Keyboards/backing vox]~ Alex Lowe [Guitars/backing vox] ~ Jack Rosa [Bass/Cajón/backing vox]

ROY WOOD PENCILLED IN FOR J4T21 CHARITY ALBUM

Sleeve for limited edition "21 Today" CD single sold at the J4T21 memorial concert last year ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Roy Wood, Jasper Carrott and a host of Birmingham rock royalty are set to contribute to a new CD being released to mark the 41st anniversary of the Birmingham pub bombings in November. "21 Today" will feature tracks donated from Midlands music legends with The Move, ELO and Wizzard founder Roy Wood designing the sleeve artwork and legendary Brum comedian Jasper Carrott contributing the foreward. Details of the contributing artistes and their songs will be confirmed in the near future.
Julie Hambleton, who lost her sister Maxine in the tragedy, is the driving force behind Justice 4 The 21, the campaign to uncover the truth and the culprits behind the 1974 outrage, added:

"All those working on the project are giving their time and talents for free, but production costs can mount up. So we are looking for 21 Birmingham firms to donate £100 each to help meet those costs. Proceeds from the sales of 21 Today will go to the Acorns Hospice, a really worthwhile cause."

Read this Birmingham Mail article to find out more about the forthcoming "21 Today" album:

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] supports and endorses the Justice 4 The 21 campaign. Please visit the J4T21 official web site for further information.

REVIEW: LIVE AT HYDE PARK ~ Jeff Lynne's ELO [Eagle Vision]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The relatively short wait for the official  release of the critically acclaimed live performance [reviewed here] by Jeff Lynne's ELO at Hyde Park ended today [Friday 11th September 2015] and it has to be said that for the second time this year, Eagle Vision have again served the ELO fan base well and have come up trumps with a fantastic, value for money package in both DVD [#EREDV1185] and Blu-Ray [#ERBRD5268] formats.
With an easy to navigate menu and the welcome bonus of the long overdue documentary "Mr. Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne & ELO" [reviewed here] plus the interesting interview montage, this release perfectly captures the magic and atmosphere of that wonderful September evening with impressive picture and sound quality in full, save for the editing out of one or two Jeff Lynne soundbites on the night.
Following on from their best selling #1 Blu-Ray release "Out Of The Blue - Live At Wembley" earlier this year [which also included "Live: The Early Years", "Fusion" and the "Discovery" album promo], Eagle Vision should be congratulation by ELO fans so often starved of official video footage. "Live In Hyde Park" by Jeff Lynne's ELO - with an impressive duration of 173 minutes - really is a 'must buy' for fans of ELO & Jeff Lynne, as a souvenir for both those who were fortunate enough to be there and those of us who watched from afar. [10/10]

amazon.co.uk are currently quoting the DVD release at £12.99 each and the Blu-Ray edition at £14.99 each [at the time of writing]. Orders can be placed via these links thus:

JEFF LYNNE'S ELO TO DOCK AT COLUMBIA RECORDS

Sony's Columbia Records are the new home for Jeff Lynne's ELO ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The "Dream" of a new Jeff Lynne's ELO album came a step closer to reality today [Thursday 10th September 2015] with the announcement by Jeff Lynne via his official Facebook page that the ELO maestro has signed a worldwide deal with Columbia Records [interestingly, not Epic Records] thus:

"Jeff Lynne's ELO [have] signed a global deal with Columbia Records and [are] set to release a new ELO album! The first new ELO music in over a decade!" More news coming soon!"
Photo: Rob Shanahan
A later post on the official Jeff Lynne's ELO web site stated that the new album will "... be the first new ELO music in 15 years ..." and - being as "Zoom" came out in 2001 - this may indicate that we could see a new studio album in October/November this year or even early in the new year, as previously suggested by ELOBF.

It is perhaps no surprise that Jeff Lynne has left Frontiers Records to return to the Sony fold - alongside fellow Traveling Wilbury Bob Dylan, of course - as he continues to enjoy the afterglow of his acclaimed Hyde Park performance last September and the ensuing increase in his public profile. The announcement is timed perfectly as it comes just a day before the release of the Hyde Park concert on DVD and Blu-Ray.

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] looks forward to the new ELO album and those much anticipated 2016 live gigs so often hinted at in Jeff's recent media interviews.

BRYAN ADAMS: BRAND NEW DAY + YOU BELONG TO ME

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The official music video for Bryan Adams' new 'single' "Brand New Day" was indeed duly unveiled via Entertainment Weekly yesterday [Tuesday 8th September 2015]. The Jeff Lynne produced track - from the forthcoming album "Get Up" [out on Friday 16th October] - is now also available to view via the official Bryan Adams Vevo YouTube channel as of this morning.

Whereas as the initially released track "You Belong To Me" has a rockabilly element to it and is very reminiscent of Dave Edmunds, "Brand New Day" has the very definite production touch of the ELO maestro and could easily slot in on Tom Petty's classic 1991 release "Into The Great Wide Open". With both tracks now released and in the public domain, we now have a reasonable idea of what to expect with "Get Up". Both music videos can be viewed below thus:
