CAUGHT LIVE [9]: QUILL @ THE ROBIN 01/08/15

Quill: In full flow at The Robin 2 last night! [Photo: John Collins @ Forever]
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Joy Strachan-Brain and Quill never cease to amaze me. This was my ninth Quill gig and - once again - their energetic and thrilling showmanship were there to be savoured by an appreciative and healthy bunch of onlookers last night [Saturday 1st August 2015] at that regular haunt for ELOBF: The Robin 2 in Bilston.

The legendary Midlands Celtic rock seven [7] piece outfit - with The Move and ELO co-founder Bev Bevan now comfortably integrated in proceedings - are riding high upon the success of their new superb album "Brush With The Moon" - inspired and written by the late Ben Brain with their latest performance indicative of a growing confidence whilst revelling in their four [4] decade legacy.

A thoroughly enjoyable and perfectly balanced set included the familiar and the new with covers of Fleetwood Mac, ELO Part II and Thin Lizzy interspersed with their own familiar favourites "Harvest" and "Say It Ain't So" with newer classics "Nine Mile Camp" and "England" from "Brush With The Moon" followed by brand new renditions of newer classics including "Falling Slowly" and "Matador", songs that will hopefully be included in their promised next release.
Bev Bevan relays a tale about Poland, Phil Bates, some whiskey and some girls ...
I love the way that Quill effortlessly slide the lead vocals duties between Joy, Dave Bailey and Matt Davies whilst drummer Tim Tandler works in perfect tandem with Bev Bevan and violinist Kate McWilliam trades musical blows [if not bows!] with slick guitarist Tony Kelsey. It's a great recipe for a band on the rise and more than worthy of the enhanced reputation that Quill are now beginning to reap.

Quill set list [14 songs]: "The Chain" ~ "Harvest" ~ "Duelling Banjos" ~ "Matador" ~ "A Showman's Life" ~ "Say It Ain't So" ~ "Jig-A-Jig" ~ "Falling Slowly" ~ "Nine Mile Camp" ~ "Galway Girl" ~ "Whiskey Girls" ~ "The Celtic Experience" ~ "England" ~ "Whiskey In The Jar"
Settled septet: Quill in 2015 ...
