REMEMBERING MIKE BURNEY

Mike Burney was an integral part of the Wizzard sound ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! It is with great regret that I wish to inform you that former Wizzard saxophonist Mike Burney sadly passed away yesterday [Thursday 13th November] at the age of 76 years. On behalf of his many admirers, Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] would like to extend our sympathies and condolences to his wife Sue and the family.
Mike wrote "Rob Roy's Nightmare [A Bit More H.A.]", the 'B' side to 1973's "I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday". He was also a renowned and accomplished saxophonist who worked with such diverse artistes as Chaka Khan, The Beach Boys, Sammy Davis, Jr., Petula Clark, Memphis Slim, Stevie Winwood, Ruby Turner, Adam Faith, Bob Hope, Cilla Black, Dionne Warwick, Matt Monro and not a few others.

Last year, a benefit concert was held for Mike during the 2013 Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival which featured Roy Wood and his Rock 'n' Roll Band, The Steve Gibbons Band, King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys, Steve Ajao and The Old Horns Band [who featured former Wizzard band mates Nick Pentelow and Charlie Grima in their ranks] thus:

Fellow Wizzard saxophonist Nick Pentelow wrote this fitting tribute earlier today:

"My good friend and mentor and beautiful saxophone player, Mike Burney died last night. He had been fighting a long and difficult battle against cancer. I have so many fabulous memories of Mike I will never forget ..."
