CAUGHT LIVE [4]: QUILL @ THE ROBIN 29/12/13

Fresh from supporting Roy Wood earlier this month: Quill
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! It has to be said that 2013 has been another remarkable year for ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] and, in particular, it has been most satisfying to finally get around to seeing Quill - in both their electric and acoustic live incarnations - on no less than four [4] occasions. Their latest appearance at The Robin 2 on Sunday 29th December was an absolute 'must-see' as well as the last ELOBF gig for 2013 and the Midlands premier Celtic Rock band delivered a stunning one hundred [100] minute set of new and old original songs as well as several scintillating interpretations of classic tracks by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Thin Lizzy, Mike Oldfield and The Waterboys - and not a few others.
The Payback in action last night ...
More than able support was provided by local funk/blues quintet The Payback who entertained the healthy and supportive crowd with their own mixture of self-penned songs "Run Away" and "Looking Good [Right Now]" together with innovative covers including "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Teardrops".
Quill in full flight ...
And what of Quill that has already been written? Only that this excellent band are like an undiscovered musical treasure. A band who have been under the radar for too long a time and deserve their emergence into the spotlight. Their set list was a wonderful seasonal cocktail of their own material, festive favourites and truly sublime covers including the Ben Brain patriotic yet anthemic masterpiece "England" as well as "Say It Ain't So", "That'll Be Christmas", "Jig-A-Jig", "Galway Girl", "Harvest", "Merry Christmas Everybody", "Whiskey In The Jar", a very much appreciated "Moonlight Shadow", "Dreams""Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree", "The Whole Of The Moon" and the marvellous title track from their newly released EP entitled "Life Is Life".
Quill will be embarking on a theatre tour in 2014 [with the odd guest appearance by Bev Bevan] so that more folks can savour the beautiful vocals of Joy Strachan-Brain, the supreme guitar work of Paul Sargent and the visionary violin wizardry of Kate McWilliam - not forgetting the immense craft and talent of Dave Bailey, Christian Nokes and Tim Tandler - at these venues thus:
Quill were: Joy Strachan-Brain [Vocals/Percussion], Paul Sargent [Guitar/Vocals], Kate McWilliam [Violin/Vocals], Dave Bailey [Keyboards/Guitar/Vocals], Christian Nokes [Bass Guitar] and Tim Tandler [Drums]

Their official web site includes the up-to-date band information including News, Discography, Merchandise, Gig Guide, Gallery and Links thus:

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommends Quill to those enlightened folks who enjoy the music of ELO, Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, The Move, The Idle Race, 'Brum Beat', The Beatles and related artistes.

Until next "Time" in the ELO [and related] Universe ... KJS ... 30-Dec-2013
